But if the firm doesn\u2019t have the capacity to fully support the work, the situation can become difficult to manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When Revenue and Risk Don\u2019t Align<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve seen cases where a matter generates significant revenue, but also creates exposure that far exceeds it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What looks like a strong opportunity on the surface can carry risks that aren\u2019t immediately obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to evaluate not just the potential upside of a case, but whether the firm has the capability and resources to handle it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Client Fit Matters Too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In other situations, the issue isn\u2019t the case \u2014 it\u2019s the client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some clients require more communication, more oversight, or a different working style than others. Every firm operates a little differently, and not every client will be a good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your firm has a certain pace, structure, or approach to communication, it\u2019s important that the client aligns with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes your instincts will tell you that something isn\u2019t quite right. That doesn\u2019t necessarily mean the client is difficult \u2014 it may simply mean they\u2019re not the right fit for your firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Listen To Your Gut.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s Okay to Say No<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring a case out or declining to take on a client is often a good decision \u2014 for both the firm and the client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making sure a client is in the right place, with the right resources and expertise, ultimately leads to better outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start with the Right Decision For Your Firm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, the goal is to ensure that the work you take on matches your firm\u2019s capabilities \u2014 the right experience, the right resources, and the right structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When those things are aligned, you\u2019re in a much better position to serve your clients effectively while managing risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes, the best decision you can make is the one you make before the work ever begins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most important risk decisions a law firm makes doesn\u2019t happen in the middle of a case.\u00a0 It happens at the very beginning \u2014 when deciding whether to take on a client.
