Like most golfers, on the drive home I caught myself thinking: maybe it\u2019s time for a new putter, a different set of clubs, or a new brand of golf balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then it hit me \u2014 my clubs didn\u2019t suddenly get worse in the past two weeks. My golf balls didn\u2019t change. And my putter didn\u2019t lose its magic. The truth was simple: it wasn\u2019t the equipment, it was me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My tempo was off. I was swinging too fast. I wasn\u2019t focused. And that got me thinking: the same thing happens in business \u2014 especially in law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u201cEquipment\u201d Problem in Law Firms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When something goes wrong in a firm \u2014 a missed statute of limitations, a conflict of interest issue, or a client complaint \u2014 our first instinct is often to blame the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cThe calendaring program let us down.\u201d<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cThe conflict checker didn\u2019t catch it.\u201d<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe need a better case management tool.\u201d<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That knee-jerk reaction leads many attorneys to shop for the \u201clatest and greatest\u201d software. But just like with golf, buying new equipment doesn\u2019t always solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s Not the Tools, It\u2019s the Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before rushing out to invest in new programs, it\u2019s worth asking: <em>Are we using the systems we already have, properly and consistently?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few examples to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Calendaring systems<\/strong>: Are you and your staff updating them daily without fail?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conflict of interest checks<\/strong>: Are all clients, former clients, and ownership interests properly logged?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Client documentation<\/strong>: Are you recording every conversation, every update, in the system right away \u2014 or are you telling yourself you\u2019ll \u201cdo it later\u201d and never getting back to it?<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When these steps slip, it\u2019s not the software that failed. It\u2019s the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Weekly (or Bi-Weekly) Check-In<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The fix isn\u2019t shiny new tools. It\u2019s discipline. Take a few minutes each week \u2014 or at least every two weeks \u2014 to sit down with your team and review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are we updating systems the way we should?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are we putting in accurate, complete information?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are we letting bad habits slide?<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your systems are only as good as the information you feed into them. If you don\u2019t use them consistently, even the most expensive software won\u2019t save you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Back to the Golf Course<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Golf taught me this: you don\u2019t need a brand-new set of clubs every time you have a bad round. You need to slow down, adjust your swing, and focus on the fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way, law firms don\u2019t always need new programs when mistakes happen.
